USS Somerset Sailors Pay Tribute to Flight 93 Passengers and Crew
A Touching Remembrance
On September 11, 2023, the USS Somerset sailed to the crash site of United Airlines Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The ship's crew held a memorial service to honor the passengers and crew who lost their lives on that tragic day.
The ceremony began with a moment of silence. Then, the ship's chaplain led the crew in a prayer. After the prayer, the crew released 40 white balloons into the sky. Each balloon represented one of the victims of Flight 93.
